Design & Build - Custom Home
This two-storey coastal minimalist home is defined by clarity of form, light-filled spaces, and a strong connection between indoor and outdoor living. Calm, restrained, and timeless in its expression, the design balances everyday functionality with a relaxed waterside lifestyle, creating a home that feels both refined and welcoming. The finished result is a family home that exceeded expectations—one that the clients describe as more than they ever imagined, with a deep sense of pride in the outcome.
Reorienting the home toward the rear canal transformed the way the family engages with the property. The new layout embraces the water as an extension of daily living, with multiple alfresco zones flowing seamlessly from the interior.
We have built our forever home and if we ever did it again we would only do it with Meadan Homes. The entire process has been stress free and actually enjoyable. Not to mention extremely efficient which resulted in us being able to move in prior to the anticipated move in date. We couldn't be happier with our new home and the experience that we had.

MEADAN APPROACH
Located on a south-facing site in Brisbane, the home is oriented toward the canal at the rear of the property—an outlook that became central to the design approach. What initially began as a renovation and extension to an existing 20-year-old brick residence ultimately evolved into a knockdown rebuild. Through careful consideration of costs, timeframes, and long-term outcomes, the decision to start fresh, allowing the design to fully respond to the site and unlock its true potential.
Reorienting the home toward the rear canal transformed the way the family engages with the property. The new layout embraces the water as an extension of daily living, with multiple alfresco zones flowing seamlessly from the interior. A jetty, fire pits, and a practical boat wash support an active, family-focused lifestyle and ensure the canal is not just a backdrop, but an integral part of the home.
Creating distinct living zones for both adults and teenage children was central to the approach. By carefully planning circulation, voids, and second living areas, we were able to give the kids their own space to relax and hang out, while adults could enjoy privacy and connection in the main living areas. This separation doesn’t feel rigid; instead, it supports interaction, supervision, and a sense of home that everyone could enjoy.
Entertaining was also a key driver of the design. We worked to make the indoor and outdoor areas feel integrated, with multiple alfresco zones, a jetty, and practical spaces like a boat wash that allow life by the water to flow effortlessly. Every detail was considered, from sightlines to functionality, so that gatherings—whether casual family nights or larger social occasions—could be enjoyed without compromise.
From the outset, this project presented an exciting opportunity to create a home that balances family living with a seamless connection to the canal at the rear of the property. For us at Meadan, the design stage was critical—not just to shape a beautiful home, but to ensure it worked perfectly for the way this family wanted to live. The canal itself became a defining element of the project. Orienting the home to embrace these views allowed the water to become part of everyday life rather than a distant backdrop. The result is a home that feels light, calm, and connected, designed for both living and entertaining, and one that the family is over the moon with.
“From the start, this project was about balancing family life with the lifestyle potential of the canal. Designing distinct living zones for the kids and adults, while creating seamless entertaining spaces, was central to our approach. It’s incredibly rewarding to see the home come together in a way that not only meets the client’s needs but exceeds their expectations—they’re thrilled, and that’s what we aim for in every project.”
