Design & Build - Custom Home
Set on a generous block, this knock-down rebuild replaces a modest former dwelling with a refined residence that seamlessly blends French provincial elegance with contemporary living. The expansive width of the site became the defining inspiration for the design, informing the home’s spatial arrangement, natural light, and overall sense of openness. Rather than simply occupying the land, the home responds to it — embracing proportion, flow, and connection to create interiors that feel both grand and inviting. The result is a timeless family home where light, scale, and sophistication come together in effortless harmony.
Light is the heart of the home. A soaring void above the main living area, encircled by glass, floods the interiors with natural sunlight, creating an airy, open atmosphere that feels connected to the outdoors.
“When we first saw the old home on our block, it was hard to imagine what could become of it. As the design took shape, the team helped us see the possibilities, turning the wide block into spaces filled with light, openness, and personality. Walking through the living areas for the first time, seeing the sunlight pour through the void, and discovering the little details in each room—it felt like the house was unfolding just for us. Every bathroom, every corner, every thoughtfully designed space reflects our lifestyle, our tastes, and our needs. Living in the home now, it’s hard to believe this is the same block where an old home once stood. It’s more than a home; it’s a story, a retreat, and a place where every day feels just a little more special.”

MEADAN APPROACH
The width of the block became the guiding force behind the design, shaping the flow of the house and the way spaces connect. Step inside, and the home unfolds in layers—soaring voids, sun-filled living areas, and carefully framed outlooks.
The extra-wide block was treated as a design asset rather than a limitation. Excellent site access made construction and logistics straightforward, allowing the design to be fully realised without compromise. Strategic placement and flow of spaces ensured the home leveraged its width, creating openness, seamless indoor-outdoor connections, and privacy, while turning the site’s generous dimensions into a defining feature of the home.
The project carefully balanced French provincial architectural elements—pitched roofs, proportion, and subtle detailing—with contemporary interventions. This strategic approach ensured the home retains classic elegance while meeting the functional and aesthetic expectations of modern living.
A soaring void over the main living area, surrounded by glass, was central to the strategy of bringing light deep into the home. Spaces were layered and oriented to capture sunlight, frame views, and create moments of pause, enhancing the sense of openness and connection to the outdoors throughout the house.
All interiors were overseen by a dedicated interior designer, ensuring a cohesive design language while allowing for personalisation. Distinctive bathrooms, individualised bedrooms, and considered material selections create a tailored experience in every room, reinforcing the home’s unique character and livability.
Upstairs is ultimately about retreat. It softens the architectural language, prioritising comfort, calm, and privacy—offering a counterbalance to the social, expressive nature of the ground floor.
The result of this strategic approach is a home that feels expansive yet intimately connected to its surroundings. By maximising the site’s width, the house achieves a seamless flow between rooms and outdoor spaces, creating a sense of openness at every turn. The careful blending of French provincial elegance with modern design ensures that timeless charm coexists with contemporary comfort, while the strategic use of light and voids fills the home with warmth and vitality.
“This project was incredibly exciting from the very start because it allowed us to explore the full potential of the block and reimagine what a modern French provincial home could be. The width of the site gave us the freedom to play with space, light, and flow, while layering traditional elements with contemporary touches to create something both timeless and fresh. From the soaring void in the main living area to the individually curated interiors, every detail was an opportunity to balance elegance with livability. It was a rare chance to craft a home that feels expansive yet intimate, refined yet approachable, and ultimately, completely tailored to the way the owners live.”
